A PLACE OF REFUGE
A refuge provides safety and shelter from danger, pursuit, or trouble. And for the last two decades, that’s exactly what Healing Transitions has done for Wake County by providing refuge for thousands of homeless, uninsured, and underserved individuals struggling with addiction and homelessness.
Some find immediate refuge from their dangerous dependence on substances through our non-medical detox center. Others find more lasting refuge from the bondage of addiction in our peer-led, long-term recovery program. For a rapidly growing number of homeless people in Wake County, our emergency drop-in shelter and coordinated entry programs are a refuge from the streets. And for those suffering over a loved one caught in the throes of alcoholism or drug addiction, our family services programs are a refuge of support and hope. Whatever brings our neighbors through our doors, the most important factor is that our doors are always open, no matter what and as many times as it takes.
A CURRENT STATE OF CRISIS
Every day, our dedicated staff stands in the gap as a refuge for our neighbors in Wake County. For many years, we’ve been known by both our community partners and those we serve as the “last house on the block.” And unfortunately since the pandemic, we’ve become known as the only house on the block for those seeking life-saving recovery services or a safe place to rest their heads at night. This is not a title we’ve given ourselves. It is a stark reality.

Every day, individuals seeking refuge are showing up in droves and we are literally busting at the seams. Due to the spike in homelessness and overdoses, as well as construction delays for our campus expansion, participants are sleeping on floors in both our shelter and our hallways, and recovery spaces are inadequate. This overcrowding is unsustainable, and the increase to our budget has been significant.
Nevertheless, Healing Transitions will continue to remain true to our promises, regardless of capacity or circumstance. To anyone who shows up at our doors, we will always say, “Come in and find refuge,” because to turn someone away could be a matter of life and death. As many times as it takes, and no matter what, we will look past the numbers to the people themselves – real people with real struggles in need of real help. KATHY’S GLIMMER OF HOPE
SHE’S SILVER CHIPPER #302, and she understands firsthand the importance of finding refuge from the storms of life. Born into an affluent family in Kinston, Kathy has suffered from the relentless disease of addiction since high school. What began as social drinking quickly escalated into a raging dependency on hard drugs.
As a result, Kathy’s relationships became severed, she lost her job in pharmaceutical sales, and she spiraled into the darkness of addiction. Amidst the chaos, her 15-year-old son nearly lost his life in a traumatic car accident, leaving him in a coma for months. Kathy coped with the fear of losing her son by turning to pills, heroin, and fentanyl, diving deeper into a world of despair and bondage – a world that seemed inescapable. Knowing she was in serious trouble, Kathy’s family tried to intervene, but there was nothing they could do to save their daughter. Kathy was in desperate need of refuge.
THE NEED IS CRITICAL
To say we need our community’s help is a vast understatement. We need a lifeline. We must raise $490,000 by year-end in order to continue saying yes to all in need. Our fellow neighbors are desperate for refuge, and you are their only chance to experience it at Healing Transitions.
