“Before Healing Transitions, I was homeless and living on the streets. Most nights, I’d sleep with a knife under my pillow because I constantly lived in fear.”

But that’s not Terri’s story anymore. She’s been in recovery since June 19, 2009. As an alumna of Healing Transitions, she’s been able to recreate her life through recovery.

“I remember my mom dropping me off at Detox late one night. I had no idea where I was. All I knew was that the minute I walked in, I felt peace and a level of safety I hadn’t felt in more than five years. It was in that moment that I knew everything was going to be okay.”

Terri has not only gained stability through recovery, but also has gained a new family. She began working at Healing Transitions in June 2011, starting out in Detox and Shelter as a monitor and working her way into her current role as Healing Transitions’ Enterprise Coordinator.

Every day, Terri comes to work with the purpose of helping people just like herself find recovery. One of her favorite quotes is, “Be the change you wish to see in the world” by Mahatma Gandhi.

“Working at Healing Transitions has benefited my life in several ways and one of those is having health insurance. I was diagnosed years ago with Barrett’s esophagus. Having that diagnosis means I need to have an endoscopy every two years. Without health insurance, I would not be able to afford this procedure. I no longer must go to the emergency room for issues that can be handled through my primary care physician. Part of recovery is taking care of your health, and having insurance has made that possible.”
